Peter Cosgrove for next GG?
They could choose worse.
Now I wish I hadn't written that, because I may have just given myself the screaming heebie jeebies thinking of who else it could have been.

Quentin Bryce has certainly raised the bar for governors-general. It's hard to imagine anyone coming in cooee of her example.
I'm so glad you-know-who didn't get the job.

Paul Burns: You're not on the selection committee, are you?
Even though I'm a war veteran and think Peter Cosgrove will do well in the office, I'm still surprised that one of the many talented and wise and experienced Aborigines wasn't chosen .... this time

I'm not, Graham. Abbott was always going to go for a soldier or a judge.

Whew! That's a relief, Paul Burns. Your mere mention here of the name of that most obedient servant of Emperor George II The Foolish had me worried that you had gone over to the side of Gloom and Sin.

Who else heard Mr Howard's response this morning? Whilst not detracting from what Peter Cosgrove did in TimorLeste, I did wonder why the acting-local-deputy-assistant-sheriff airbrushed Jim Molem's risky efforts, at the outset of our involvement there, out of the picture? After all, Jim Molem's association with the Liberal Party is well-known: this is a democracy -sometimes - so Jim Molem is allowed to take any political stance he likes. Did they meet once too often, perhaps?

Perhaps even more interesting GB is why the scribes even bothered to consult Howard in the first place? Was it to ask him if he was disappointed in not getting the GG-ship and did JWH give an an off the record answer to the effect of he was gutted and couldn't understand how Tony had not kept his word?

Re: Peter Cosgrove for next GG?
Thanks for that link, Paul. Don't expect an independent and forthright G-G like Peter Hollingsworth; I don't expect Governor-General Peter Cosgrove to rock any boats. His personal history whilst at Bully School is a worry though.
