The Philosopher's Mail - and Big Boobs, 3 Headed Cats, Violent Kindergartens, Great Cappuchino Ripoff, Is Diana Dead?
I'm listening to as much free, unMurdoched, sensible ABC as I can before it becomes extinct.
My enthusiasm was rewarded in good measure by the Radio National "Sunday Extra" interview with Alain de Botton about his alternative to the "Daily Mail" and which he calls "The Philosopher's Mail".
Since I have trouble posting the link here, you could try the ABC Radio National webpage and then scroll down the program list on the right hand side and click on Sunday Extra .... otherwise try putting "philosophers' mail" or ""philosopher's mail" into you favourite search-engine..
The basic concept is to take the same events or topics as in the tabloid media but to ask searching questions about them and about what these stories mean in our own lives - this is something the tabloids and d.c.TV do not do.
It may not have been his intention but he is giving us a glimpse into how the entertainment/news media is digging its own grave. It may not have been his intention either but he seems to be undermining the foundations of the current system of social control.
Anyway, suggest you have a listen and see what you think.
